How to Make a Feather Headband

With feather headbands appealing to many this season and year, there may be reason to add this to your list of do-it-yourself know-how. Obviously one of the appeals of the feather headband is that each one is one-of-a-kind. That, in fact, makes them easier to create, and may prove to ensure a more enjoyable creative experience. There are some common methods that are used in a number of head bands so, we will look at those first in our how to make a feather headband once-over.

The common element in nearly every design is a "pad". This is the combination of usually two materials. Think sturdy backing (leather, fusible web, etc.) and material that is okay to be seen on your feather headband. Consider dark colors or matching colors. These two will be combined. The shape is up to you. If you want the small collection of feathers on the side of your head plan for a circle or tear drop that is just that size. This is what the feathers will be attached to. Then this will be attached to the headband.

To connect our two fabrics, two methods can be used. The first is hot glue and the second is sewing. If you plan to make a beautiful and lasting piece, you may actually want to consider using both. Once they are combined, simply one atop the other and wrapped so none of the backing is visible, you can begin attaching feathers. The design of feathers is obviously your choice. You can use hot glue to attach feathers as well. In some cases you may want to clip, shape, iron or in some other way alter the feathers before placement. Some designers stick the tip of the feather into the material, but take care that the headband is comfortable and the feather securely attached.

Next you can use a combination or single method of glue and sewing to attach your feathered pad to the headband. Some methods may attach the pad to the headband before decorating. This sometimes works better in cases of sewing the pad onto the headband. You may want to adapt the process depending on if you have a "cap pad" or a slender pad that wraps all the way around your headband.
